No, there is no obligation for employers to pay students. However, employers may wish to hire students that they feel would be a good fit in their organization for after-school or summer work.
Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage is paid by the Ministry of Education for students on work experience, co-operative education, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship and school-work transition programs. Once employers start to pay wages and benefits, WSIB coverage becomes the responsibilty of the employer.
